Target audience demographic
My target audience is people between the age of 15 - 25. I have chose this age group because because i believe it is the most appropriate for the content of the film. I think young adults, whilst growing up, seek the need for thrill, A horror film provides this for them.Young adults want to live life to fullest because they are at a prime age. The audience i have chosen would be suitable for the genre of my short film because they are less put off by violence and unnatural images, i believe the older generation would have a negative reaction to horror films because they do not seek the thrill of a young adult.
The main gender that my short film will target will be male. It is proven that men are more likely to watch horror film because of the thrill. The male gender is more attracted to adrenaline and thrill. Also, males are more likely to enjoy the violence and spookiness a horror movie holds. I chose the male gender because overall i believe they will be more intrigued with the content.
Audience figures
https://saraeveninga2media.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/audience-research.png
According to the website above, 33% of men over the age of 35 enjoy watching horror films whereas only 22% of women would enjoy them.
36% of men under the age of 35 enjoy watching horror films, 44% of women under 35 enjoy watching horror films.
Based on these figures i can recognize that men are more likely to watch horror films whether they are over 35 or under. So for my short film, choosing a male gender as the target audience was right because due to figures they are more likely to watch horror films over women.
In addition, based on these figures i have noticed that not only men under the age of 35 are more likely to watch horror films but women are more likely to as well. This means that the age group i have chosen is suitable for both genders therefore attracting the maximum amount of people that enjoy watching horror films.

A ghost story - spirits or the rising sun inn
A family party was on the go. A screech was heard from the kitchen but was unnoticed. Later on that night they saw a figure looking out the window. They had a vivid description of the figure, and stood there with its droopy structure.
research competitors
Paranormal activity is one of my main competitors. They produced a low budget horror film with the same idea of paranormal activity occurring. Their horror film was so successful they spent 1.8 million making it and in return gain 67 million back. It is a very well known film and has high ratings.

Constraints
Time
The time frame i have is short. In film, they would spent a huge amount of time planning pre-production and then would spend a lot of time on post production. I will plan in advance to make sure i get everything done by using deadlines. In media it is important to stick to deadlines otherwise you will be running behind schedule which leads to rushing. Rushing leads to mistakes.
Budget
My budget is very small due to the limitation of finance. In short film, the budget is very small compared with long films. In film, they would spend millions creating it because it will be viewed by a mass audience. In short film, the audience is smaller therefore more open to different interpretations. The key items in my budget would be film equipment such as Camera, lighting, boom pole etc. I will research what i need to complete my short film, then research the costs of what i need.
Personnel
I would only need one main actor in my short film. The type of production crew i would use would be a skeleton crew. A skeleton crew is the minimum number of personnel needed to operate and maintain an item at its most simple operating requirements. This means its the minimum amount of people needed to make a short film. Based on my budget, this will be beneficial due to not spending money on a vast amount of crew members.
Resources
The resources i have available to me is the location. The location i am using in my short film is a school and i have full access to a school. I am very lucky, in real life media productions they would need to hire a location scout to find a suitable location for their film, then need to receive permission to film on the premises.
Another resource i have is AVID editing software. In real life media productions people would need to pay a high fee to use editing software and not only that, hire someone to control the editing software. In short film, i am lucky to have the resources i have because if i did not, my budget will be easy to go over due to the costs of resources.
Legal and ethical considerations
For my short film, i will successfully have permission to film in my location. Unfortunately, in real life media productions they would have to gain permission first. My short film is fictional therefore the characters within it are not real. My short film does not break the law in any way or would be considered unethical.
Codes of practice
I will make sure that i stick to the codes of practice within my short film. For example, you have to make sure that whoever is in your film has given you permission to be filmed. I will make sure i have obtained permission from every person i will be filming. Another example would be health and safety, i will make sure that the location is full assessed for risks and hazards before filming starts.
Copyright
I will abide by the copyright law. I will make sure that any piece of music, that is played in the background within scenes, has been given permission to be played in my short film.

Developing the idea - analysis
I am legend
I am legend is not a horror film however, It has some scenes where there is huge amounts of tension and makes the audience still in their seats. The techniques that the director uses in this film is the use of silence in a dark room. The fact that it is dark means that anything could be around you and you would not even know. There is a scene from I am legend when the characters dog runs accidentally into a dark room full of mutants. The character goes after his dog however it is to dark to see him, he uses the flashlight to see.
I intend to incorporate this technique in my short film due to it being so effective. The tension will drive the audience crazy because they are waiting for the stereotypical horror clip where something appears in the dark, however because nothing jumps out the audience will be left clenching their seats due to them waiting so anxiously.
World war Z
World war Z refers to world war zombie. This film has a variety of scenes where the tension builds up. An example of this would be when the family in the film are running up a flight of stairs from the zombies. The stair well is surrounded in darkness. The director could of chose a flashlight as the source of light for the family, however he chose them to have a red flair. Red is the symbol for death so the audience sees it as a signal for something bad to happen.

I intend to incorporate this into my short film due to it being so effective for the audience. When the audience sees nothing but a red room they know something bad is going to happen. Also, the red effect allows the audience to clearly see whats happening in the room which is a strong effect because if the room was dark the audience may not see what the director wants them to see. In addition, due to visibility being clearer the audience will see the zombies in more vivid detail making it more horrifying.

Brainstorming ideas fort short film
Type of genre: Horror and comedy
Horror
Possible story lines: There is one character - Male. Location is an abandon school. He has been sent on a job to fix a circuit for the lights within the school. The abandon school is being refurbished to be used again. The guy walks into the school on the job and everything is dark. He attempts to find the circuit. The circuit is in the middle section of the school and he has to go through a number of doors and corridors. He realises that strange things keep happening around with whilst he walks through the corridors with his flashlight. He point the flashlight down the corridor, points it another way and when he points it back a creature is sitting there looking at him dead in the eye. He turns away and looks back, it is gone.
Drama
Possible story lines: There is two characters - Both male. The characters have been brothers for life but not by blood. Location is a variety of places at random. They are filming each other and are influenced to make each other laugh. The audience will get to know both of the characters through the eye of one. The camera will be eye level so it looks like the character is talking to the audience. The audience watches their life go on day by day and all the funny times they had. All of sudden the screen cuts to black. One of the characters is in a hospital bed and looks very sick.
Pros for horror: The location is accessible due to currently working in a school. The equipment would be very minimal. Their is not much speaking in the film so finding the perfect role would not be necessary. Resources will be easy to access due to being in a school.
Cons for horror: Making the creature look as UN-human as possible could be a difficult task. Costume making will take some time. The public might find the film not as scary as they thought it would be.
Pros for drama: There is only two actors in the film. Only two camera angles are needed throughout the whole film. An idea that is not common. Unique. The resources will be easy to obtain, followed by equipment.
Cons for drama: Would suit a specific type of audience. Finding the right actors to make it seem as real as possible could be hard. Producing a quality script would be a difficult task as well.
The idea i have decided on would be in the horror genre. In my opinion, i think it would work due to darkness being one of the biggest factor. The aim of a horror is to scare you, if you was walking around an abandoned school in pitch black with nothing but a flashlight, you would be scared.
I have not yet named this film yet, possible names would be The School run due to its double meaning. The character is running within the school and the day to day school run.
